Why You Need to Schedule Drain Cleaning on a Regular Basis

When you’re spending the rainy season dealing with a 40-hour workweek, doing your taxes, raising your kids, and fighting off a cold at the same time, maintaining your drain and sewer system is probably pretty low on the priorities list. Still, it is something that you need to give at least a little bit of thought to if you want to keep your home running smoothly. There are a lot of issues that can afflict your drain and sewer system, which will then have ripple effects throughout the rest of the home. You need to make sure that you maintain your drain and sewer pipes, and the best way to do that is with regular drain cleaning. Have a look at some of the problems that can crop up if you don’t schedule drain cleaning on a regular basis.

Clogs

The most common problem for drain and sewer pipes to deal with is the simple buildup of waste over time. As the waste builds up on the pipe walls, the flow of water is restricted. Eventually, the waste deposit will obstruct the pipe completely and it will clog. Aside from being an obvious inconvenience, a clogged drain pipe will lead to backups and other issues. If you notice that your drains are draining more slowly than they normally do, that’s a sure sign that a clog is already partially formed in the pipe. You should call for drain cleaning services as soon as you notice that.

Lime Scale

If normal waste clogs are problematic, lime scale is worse. Lime scale is a type of mineral deposit formed over long-term exposure to hard water, which is water with a high level of magnesium and calcium particles in it. Lime scale restricts the flow of water through the pipe, just like a waste clog does. The difference, though, is that lime scale will eventually harden if it isn’t removed quickly enough. If this happens, there is often little choice but to replace the pipe entirely. Keep in mind that your drain pipes can suffer long-term damage in this way if you don’t have them cleaned often enough.

Tree Roots

You might think that you don’t have to worry about tree roots if your sewer line isn’t directly under one, but you would be wrong. Tree root structures cover a much wider area than the visible part of the tree, and they can easily bore into a sewer pipe over time. Once the root has infiltrated the line, it will begin to spread until it takes over the entire interior of the pipe. These roots need to be professionally removed, before they punch even more holes in the line. If you have trees within line of sight of your home, you should make sure that you have the pipe cleaned every year or two, just to be safe.
