How to Tell if You Have a Plumbing Leak

Leaks are among the most common, and damaging, plumbing issues in the average home. Further complicating the problem is that leaks are often quite subtle. It can be quite difficult to detect a leak in the system before it does quite a bit of damage. If you know what to look for, though, you can still detect plumbing leaks before they can cause too much damage.

Watch the Water Meter

One of the easiest ways to tell if you have a plumbing leak is to turn off all the plumbing appliances in your home, and then watch the water meter. If the meter is still running, it means that water is still leaving the system. You likely have a leak if that is happening.

Monitor Your Water Bills

You should monitor your monthly water bills, in case there is a sudden increase. Your water bills are going to rise as you use more water, of course. However, a substantial rise for no apparent reason indicates that there is likely a leak in your system. You should definitely call a plumber to examine your plumbing system if you happen to notice this issue.

Dropping Water Pressure

A drop in water pressure could signify a number of issues, either a blockage or a leak in the system. The location and severity of the water pressure drop are what serve as the primary clues as to which problem it is. Either way, you should have a professional examine your system to find the issue.
