The Advantages of Trenchless Pipe Replacement

When a plumbing pipe in your home needs to be replaced, it’s not that difficult to exhume and replace it. Some plumbing pipes, though, are less easy to remove and replace. Your water and sewer lines, two of the most important pipes in your system, connect your home to the city water and sewer mains. Though these pipes are designed to last quite a while, they will eventually need to be replaced. When that happens, it’s a good idea to make sure that you schedule trenchless pipe replacement.

Why Trenchless is Better

Prior to the invention of trenchless technology, the only way to replace a water or sewer line was to dig it up. Considering how much of these pipes ran under the home’s property before reaching their destination, exhuming them required quite a bit of effort. A trench would have to be dug for the entire length of the pipe, so that the entire thing could be removed. This was incredibly destructive to the surrounding area, requiring potentially thousands of dollars in landscape remediation afterwards. Fortunately, the arrival of trenchless technology obviated the need to deal with those issues.

How it Works

Trenchless technology involves digging a small hole at each end of the pipe section that needs to be replaced. A machine then pushes the pipe section from one hole and out of the other one. While the machine is pushing the old pipe section out, it is simultaneously laying the new section of pipe. The old pipe is automatically cut into smaller sections as it reaches the end of the line, for easier disposal. Once the new pipe is laid, the holes are filled in.
